LONGMEADOW, Mass. — Longmeadow police are in the process of citing a driver after the SUV they were driving flew off the road Thursday evening and became lodged between trees 10 feet up in the air, according to police.

On Jan. 11, dispatchers received a call about the crash at the intersection of Converse Street and Redfern Drive around 7:45 p.m., the Longmeadow Fire Department said previously. There, firefighters found an SUV lodged between a group of trees 10 feet up in the air.

Two people were trapped inside the SUV, but were unhurt, the fire department said. Firefighters were able to rescue the driver and passenger from the vehicle.

According to Longmeadow Police Chief Robert Stocks, an investigation into the crash revealed a 2019 Hyundai Tucson was traveling north on Redfern Drive when the driver failed to make the turn at the intersection with Converse Street. The SUV continued to travel across both lanes on Converse Street before flying into the trees.

“It has been determined that the crash was due to the vehicle traveling at a speed greater than reasonable, compounded by the operator’s lack of familiarity with the area and roadway,” Stocks wrote in an email.

The driver will be cited for speeding, failure to stop at a stop sign and a marked lanes violation, he said. The SUV sustained considerable damage and has been towed.
