BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — A UPS driver was passing by Indiana’s Lake Monroe when they spotted a damaged guardrail — then a vehicle crashed in the water, on Friday, Oct. 14, according to firefighters.
As the driver looked on, they could see the passenger door moving, as someone inside struggled to escape. With 911 on the line, the UPS driver rushed down an embankment and into the water to help, the Monroe Fire Protection District said in a release.
Firefighters arrived at the scene a short time later, but getting the driver out of the crashed car was a challenge, officials said. Ultimately, crews cut out the windshield and pulled the driver through the opening and onto a boat.
The driver was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment, the release said.
Authorities credit the UPS driver for paying attention to their surroundings and stepping up to assist.
“If not noticed by the UPS driver it is unknown how much longer the injured driver could’ve been in the water before someone spotted the accident,” firefighters said.
