POTTSTOWN, Pa. — Authorities say a man was hit by a train in a Philadelphia suburb and was conscious and alert while being dragged a short distance on the tracks.

The accident happened at a railroad crossing in Pottstown around midnight Sunday. Officials say the Norfolk Southern train was heading west toward Reading and was unable to stop before hitting the man, whose name has not been released.

WFMZ-TV reports that the man was stuck under the train for more than an hour before he was rescued. Officials say he was conscious and alert the whole time.

Pottstown police tell The Mercury newspaper the man was rescued from between the rails under the train. Sgt. Richard Thomas says the man was flown to a hospital for treatment and called him “extremely lucky.”
