VERONA, N.Y. — An exterior construction elevator collapsed at Turning Stone Resort Casino on Tuesday afternoon, injuring five subcontractor workers, according to a casino official.

The elevator fell from the second floor of a seven-story hotel that is under construction as part of the resort’s major expansion project, said Joel Barkin, a spokesperson for Turning Stone.

All five injured workers are in stable condition, and most have already been discharged from the hospital, Barkin said at 7:45 p.m. The remaining workers are also expected to be discharged soon.

The elevator was being disassembled and removed by a subcontractor at the time of the incident, he said. It was not immediately clear whether anyone was inside the elevator when it fell or whether workers were injured below it.

Turning Stone is continuing to investigate what caused the collapse to occur, Barkin said.

At around 3:59 p.m., five ambulances responded to the casino at 5218 Patrick Road, according to the Oneida County 911 Center.

Two patients were taken to Wynn Hospital in Utica; two were taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and one was taken to Oneida Health Hospital in Oneida, according to dispatches.

The casino issued this statement:

“We are aware of an incident that occurred earlier today at a construction site on our campus involving multiple injuries.

Emergency responders are on the scene, and we are working closely with emergency personnel to support their response.

We will provide additional information when it becomes available.”

The hotel is part of a large expansion project at the casino. Company officials had said the hotel would open in June with 258 guest rooms and suites.

The expansion, which the Oneidas call Turning Stone Evolution, is the largest construction project at the resort since it opened in 1993. It was initially expected to be completed by 2027.

When the project is complete, the Turning Stone campus will have more than 1,000 rooms in four hotels and more than 225,000 square feet of events and meeting space. That will make it the “largest meetings and conventions resort destination” in the state, nation officials said.
