SALISBURY, Md. — A Salisbury firefighter feels for the right spot during a lesson on surgical cricothyrotomy as part of their department’s advanced airway management training.
A surgical cricothyrotomy is an emergency procedure used when standard airway methods fail, such as when intubation and ventilation are no longer possible. It involves making a surgical incision through the skin and the cricothyroid membrane to insert a tube directly into the trachea, securing an airway for breathing.
