VENTURA, Calif. — A 31-year-old Ventura man had to be rescued by helicopter about 3:30 p.m. Sunday after falling into the Punch Bowl in Santa Paula Canyon, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.

Juan Viramontes injured his back after jumping off the cliffs into the pool of water, according to authorities.

The area is in a remote part of the Los Padres National Forest only accessible by foot or helicopter.

The Sheriff’s Department’s helicopter responded with a rescue crew and paramedic, who successfully hoisted Viramontes approximately 140 feet out of a narrow canyon.

He was taken via ambulance to an undisclosed hospital.
