Fla. man sentenced to prison after ambushing paramedics

A Sarasota man got 40 years plus 20 years’ probation for a staged 2019 shooting at Sarasota County paramedics after an automated 911 “fall” alert

SARASOTA, Fla. — A Sarasota man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison, as well as 20 years of probation, for opening fire on Sarasota County paramedics responding to a 2019 911 call.

Sarasota police said Tyran Young was convicted on multiple charges, including aggravated assault on a firefighter, shooting into an occupied vehicle, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, unlawful use of a two-way communications device and misuse of 911.

WTSP reported the attack occurred after crews were dispatched to an automated “fall” alert on Goodrich Avenue.

When the paramedics arrived, residents said no one had called. As the paramedics returned to the ambulance, Young fired, hitting the rig twice. No one was hurt.

Detectives later concluded he staged the attack and tried to blame his juvenile nephew, noting Young’s phone searches mirrored a 2018 automated 911 call, a suspected “dry run.”

Young is awaiting transfer from Sarasota County Jail to the Florida Department of Corrections.
