FRANKLINVILLE, N.Y. — A Cattaraugus County man was impaled Saturday night when he fell onto a gate inside his home, Franklinville police said.

The 67-year-old man was getting up to go to the bathroom when he lost his balance and fell backward onto the London-style gate, which had decorative spikes at the top and which police said was used to section off a room. At least one of the spikes traveled through the back of his arm. Emergency responders extricated the man from the fence with Mercy Flight standing by.

The man was experiencing balance problems and had fallen off a ladder a month earlier.

The Franklinville Fire Department and Trans Am Ambulance responded to the call. The man was taken to Erie County Medical Center for treatment. — Samantha Christmann
