DETROIT — Fire Department officials Tuesday offered their long overdue plan to overhaul the broken ambulance system.

Fire Commissioner James Mack Jr. told a City Council committee he plans to hire 20 emergency medical technicians as soon as possible; pressure paramedics to return to routes more quickly after hospital stops; and enlist the media to help educate residents about when to call 911.

Mack’s appearance came six months after members requested an update on the system. He admitted it’s on the brink of collapse.
