Calif. firefighter-EMT dies from occupational cancer

Firefighter-EMT Tamara Thacher died Tuesday after serving 31 years with the Sacramento Fire Department

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A California firefighter-EMT with occupational cancer died on Tuesday.

Firefighter-EMT Tamara Thacher had served with the Sacramento Fire Department for 31 years, including as a training instructor and peer support counselor, the department said.

“Tami realized a need to help serve other members of the department who were struggling with behavioral health issues,” the department said in a Facebook post. “She became a peer support counselor and helped countless firefighters deal with their personal struggles.”

The department also described Thacher as a “role model for aspiring female firefighters.”
