DOTHAN, Ala. — The City of Dothan recognized the essential role of emergency medical services (EMS) in providing lifesaving care 24/7 at a recent commission meeting where they highlighted the importance of access to quality emergency care, the expanding role of EMS in healthcare, and the dedication of EMS professionals through extensive training and gave awards for John T. Ingram EMT of the Year to Firefighter Levi Tharp and Paramedic of the Year to Firefighter James Burnham.
“I would not have gotten this award without the help of my awesome crew and the many mentors I have had in the DFD,” said James Burnham. “Being a paramedic allows me to help those in need, make an impact in their lives, and show them the love Christ showed me.”
For Burnham, being a firefighter paramedic means being able to care for people and be there for people on their worst days. Being named paramedic of the year means a lot to him, because he believes it shows him that all the work he has put in is showing and that he is making a difference.
“This job means a lot to me, so being told I’m doing a good job brings me a lot of joy,” said Levi Tharp. “I’m thankful for the team I work with and the mentors that have shown me what it means to be a great EMT. It gives me a lot of pride.”
Tharp shared that winning this award means so much to him and having the opportunity to try and be a positive effect on someone having a tough day or emergency gives him a great sense of purpose.
The city also acknowledged the diverse team of individuals involved in EMS, including both career and volunteer members. In appreciation of their contributions, the city declared May 18–24, 2025, as Emergency Medical Services Week in Dothan, with the theme “EMS Strong: We Care. For Everyone.” and encouraged the community to participate in related observances.
