NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro visited a Manhattan EMS station on Monday to deliver donated meals and thank crews for their service on International Firefighters Day.

De Blasio and Nigro recognized personnel at FDNY EMS Station 4 and brought meals donated by Harold’s Restaurant, according to AM New York Metro.

“None of us could’ve possibly prepared for the coronavirus, but the way you kept up and the way you stuck together, we want to honor you for your incredible service,” de Blasio said during the business. “Today we want to say thank you for what you’ve done.”

The FDNY has seen its highest call volume in department history, with daily EMS calls increasing by 50% at the height of the pandemic.

The visit to Station 4 was part of an International Firefighters Day celebration in which charity organizations Frontline Foods and 9/11 Day partnered with fire departments and sponsors across the country to deliver about 5,000 meals to firefighters and EMS providers at more than 200 stations.
