Patient dies after being dropped from stretcher

Medics were transporting an 81-year-old man from his house to an ambulance when the cot tipped, resulting in a head injury

NORTHFIELD, Ohio — An 81-year-old man who was dropped from an ambulance stretcher has died, and his cause of death is under investigation.

Northfield Fire Department paramedics responded to a medical emergency at Charles Borton’s home, and were moving him from the house to the ambulance when the cot tipped over, and caused an injury to his head, FOX 8 reports.

Borton was taken to Hillcrest Hospital and later died. The cause of death is being investigated by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Medics had troubling moving the stretcher due to weather and surface conditions, Chief Jason L. Buss said.

“Our kind of motto around here is we treat all of our patients like we treat our family,” he said. “So when an incident like this occurs, when we are treating a patient and they get hurt, the caretakers, myself, everyone involved are deeply upset by the incident that happened.”
