SHERWOOD, Ark. — A man pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a 2016 shooting death of a volunteer firefighter.

Arkansas Online reported that Mark Eugene Pruitt, 49, pleaded guilty Thursday — two weeks before his jury trial was set to begin. Pruitt was sentenced to eight years in prison.

Pruitt fatally shot Lt. Jason Adams, 29, after he was sent to Pruitt’s residence in response to a call about a man having a seizure. Adams lived near the residence and was the closest responder available.

After entering his plea, Pruitt faced Adams’ relatives, including his fiancé, to apologize.

Adams’ mother, Phylis Stroud, said she was glad the ordeal was over.

“We can move forward, hopefully,” Stroud said.
