TUCSON, Ariz. —An American paramedic was killed Sunday after an explosion in Ukraine.
KGUN9.com reported that Joseph Stone, with the Organization for Security and Cooperation Europe, was a paramedic with the Special Monitoring Mission. He previously worked as a Tucson paramedic.
According to the OSCE, Stone was with two monitors of the mission when “their vehicle was heavily damaged by an explosion.” Two other people with Stone were taken to a hospital.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing, but officials said the vehicle may have come in contact with a mine.
Stone began as a basic EMT and worked his way up to paramedic; he worked for AMR in Southern Arizona for 9 years.
“He wasn’t a thrill seeker, he wasn’t in it for the ego or the glory or the drama,” Aaron Haworth, who worked with Stone, said. “He really was that guy that would kind of just do the job and gut it out because it was his duty, you know. And I really honor him for that.”
