FRISCO, Texas — A sledding incident involving three teenagers in Frisco left one 16-year-old girl dead and another critically injured, according to the Frisco Police Department.
Frisco police and fire crews were dispatched around 2:26 p.m. on Jan. 25 to the area of Majestic Gardens Drive and Killian Court after an uninvolved caller reported a sledding accident. When responders with Frisco PD and Frisco Fire Department arrived, they found two 16-year-old females with life-threatening injuries and immediately began lifesaving measures.
Both patients were transported to local hospitals, where one later died from her injuries. The second remains in critical condition.
Frisco Independent School District officials later identified the victim who died as Elizabeth Angle, a sophomore at Wakeland High School, WFAA reports. In a letter sent to families, district officials said Angle played soccer and was well-liked by her peers and teachers.
“Our entire campus community is impacted by this tragedy,” the district wrote, adding that counselors will be available to support students when classes resume.
Preliminary findings indicate the two girls were riding on a sled being pulled by a Jeep Wrangler driven by a 16-year-old male. Witnesses told investigators the sled struck a curb and then collided with a tree.
The incident remains under active investigation with assistance from the Denton County District Attorney’s Office.
A separate sledding-related fatality was also reported in Arkansas, where a 17-year-old male died after riding on an inner tube being pulled by a motor vehicle when it struck a tree, according to KATV.
“Emergency responders provided immediate medical assistance; however, despite lifesaving efforts, the juvenile succumbed to his injuries,” according to a statement from the Saline County Sheriff’s Office.
Police also urged the public to use caution during winter weather conditions, noting that snow and ice can create hazardous surfaces and lead to serious or fatal injuries.
