Car crash before EMS graduation shows dedication in a dress

There is nothing like doing a trauma assessment in heels and heading to your EMT basic graduation late, with bloody knees

By Amanda Posey

I am a volunteer first responder who just completed my EMT basic class at Aiken Technical College.

My best off-duty save happened the day we graduated. I was en route to my graduation with 13 minutes to be there when the car behind me hit a tree truck.

I saw the car go up in flames in my review mirror.

I told myself, “Oh no I am in a dress and high heels, this is not happening.” Needless to say, I turned around and ran across the four lanes in my dress and heels, with my jump bag in hand.

Thank God for the bystanders that pulled him out of the car as I was getting to the patient. There is nothing like doing a trauma assessment in heels and a dress and heading to your EMT basic graduation (late) with bloody knees.

Our patient survived with a compound fracture and I will never forget my graduation day. Welcome to EMS, where emergencies are never convenient. God bless all our medical responders!
