Smiths Medical recently received approval from the FDA to sell an advanced transport ventilator that provides advanced transport support for patients in respiratory distress.

The paraPAC plus supports basic life-sustaining needs, as well as the needs of an inpatient receiving CPAP or other high-efficiency oxygen therapy. It has been used clinically since 2011 in countries accepting CE-marked devices.

The device weighs about 5 pounds and measures 235 mm wide by 165 mm deep by 93 mm high. It’s designed to fit at a patient’s stretcher or bed, in an ambulance, and on an MRI table. It will continue to function next to a 3-Tesla shielded magnet and won’t affect MRI scan quality, the company said.

The paraPAC contains an electronic alarm system of visual and audible signals that are powered by a MRI compatible lithium battery. It also comes in a rugged case.
