WICHITA, Kan. — LifeSave Transport will host the second annual “Day In Our Life” billing workshop on May 10, designed to show both sides of an emergency call – the care providers and the billing department.

Created by LifeSave Billing Director Nancy Ratzlaff, the “Day In Our Life” workshop exposes each part of a patient’s journey in the hope of showcasing the challenges each side faces.

“I’ve always believed that patient care providers and billers share the same goals when it comes to taking care of our patients,” Ratzlaff said. “My goal in developing this workshop was to show both sides the challenges faced in the course of a ‘typical’ call, the processing of that documentation into a billable claim, and the importance of working together as a team to improve overall patient care.”

Workshop participants will see a call through, step-by-step, beginning with initial contact to a communication center and realistic trauma and medical scenarios accompanied by actual LifeSave aircraft on-site. Both care providers and billing personnel will work together to complete paperwork for reports and claims, following the documentation all the way through to a panel of representatives from insurance companies.

The big picture is to “emphasize care beyond transport.”

“This event is a very unique training opportunity where patient care providers and billing professionals get to see both sides of a call,” Kansas EMS Association COO Mary Napier said. “In the end, they are both here to be an advocate for the patient, so they need to know what each team member might deal with from the initial patient contact to the end when the patient bill is taken care of.”

The workshop is sponsored by KEMSA Society of Billing Professionals. Attendance for KEMSA is $50 and $75 for non-members. Register online by May 3 on the KEMSA website.
