HOPEWELL, N.J. — One Hopewell Fire Department member was hospitalized for heat exhaustion and another member of that company was treated at the fire scene for smoke inhalation during a fierce Monday night fire that left a township home uninhabitable.

Two cats are missing and are believed to have died from the heavy smoke inside the house, township police Chief George Meyer said.

During the blaze, at 1642 Harbourton-Rocktown Road, an ambulance from the Hopewell Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Unit that was on standby several hundred yards south of the scene caught on fire. The ambulance was quickly engulfed in flames and destroyed before firefighters could redirect their efforts to it, Chief Meyer said.
