3 NY marathon runners suffer cardiac arrest

NEW YORK — One runner died and two others were hospitalized after suffering heart attacks during yesterday’s New York City Marathon.

One runner died after suffering cardiac arrest during yesterdays New York City Marathon. Two others suffered heart attacks but were later revived.

The man who died collapsed at Central Park West and 80th street. He was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. He was 59.

Jean-Louis Maubaret, 59, collapsed in the middle of the Queensboro Bridge after suffering cardiac arrest, police said. A fellow runner stopped and administered CPR until two emergency medical technicians arrived. The runner was taken to New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center, where he was listed as critical but stable, according to one of the EMTs.

Maubaret was running alongside his wife across the Queensboro Bridge between the 15th and 16th mile of the race when he collapsed, unconscious and not breathing, according to EMT Salvatore Sangeniti. Sangeniti said when he reached Maubaret, he found another runner performing CPR. He placed a defibrillator on Maubarets chest, reviving him.

A third runner suffered cardiac arrest on East 107th Street yesterday afternoon. The man, whose name was not immediately known, had collapsed and was not breathing, according to an FDNY spokesman. EMTs performed CPR as he was rushed by ambulance to Mount Sinai Medical Center. A defibrillator was administered in the hospitals emergency room, and the runners pulse was restored.
