Audit: Texas EMS at risk of fraud, abuse

Auditors said they don’t have a system to document when expired medications are disposed, or when supplies are damaged, contaminated or deemed unusable

AUSTIN, Texas — City auditors have found that Austin-Travis County EMS does not adequately manage medical supplies in its inventory, including syringes and some medications that are not tracked once they leave the agency’s central warehouse, according to a report presented to several City Council members Wednesday.

Looking at fiscal years 2012 and 2013, auditors identified a number of practices that make it difficult for the agency to account for such supplies, such as not having a system to document when expired medications are disposed, or when supplies are damaged, contaminated or deemed unusable, according to the audit.
