BERKELEY COUNTY, W.Va. — West Virginia State Police confirmed a teenager from Frederick County, Md. died in a crash on Sunday night.
It happened just after 10 p.m., in the 2100 block of Shepherdstown Road near Blairton Road. They say the vehicle traveled about 350 ft. before striking the guardrail at the intersection. WHAG spoke with the EMS crew from the Shepherdstown Volunteer Fire Department that happened to be driving by when they spotted the flames.
Firefighter Troy Matlock was part of that crew and said, “The car was on its top and the engine block was fully in flames, so we just kind of hopped to it.” “Most of the time we get our calls from the citizens,” said Fire Chief Ross Morgan. “It’s very rare that we are actually the caller and happen to be there at the same time. It’s rare.” The Shepherdstown Fire Department is calling the crew’s actions “heroic,” especially since they didn’t have time to mentally or emotionally prepare.
