LIVERPOOL, England — An off-duty paramedic risked his life by walking into highway traffic to prevent a crash after seeing a car crashed in the middle of the road.
Liverpool Echo reported that paramedic Shaun Hartley-Foster was on his way to work when he saw a car that had crashed into a highway barrier. The crash had broken the vehicle’s hazard lights, and cars were speeding past at 70 mph.
After getting the driver off the road, Hartley-Foster had to decide what to do about the vehicle.
“I had a tough decision to make as there was almost certainly about to be a major crash which would probably have ended with fatalities,” he said. “Common sense says stay put stay safe but the human side of me just couldn’t stand by and watch other vehicles plough into the stricken car.”
Hartley-Foster walked out into the highway with his high-visibility jacket on and two torches to warn drivers of the crashed vehicle.
“For me I think it’s probably the stupidest thing I’ve ever done but I just couldn’t stand by and let people crash,” he said. “I still feel sick thinking about it. It was horrific. I knew what I needed to do - I needed to keep myself safe but human instinct kicked in.”
