Gov. Kay Ivey has allocated $35 million from Alabama’s federal coronavirus relief money to set up a grant program to help doctors, dentists, clinics, ambulance services, and other health care and emergency response providers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The money comes from the $1.8 billion the state received from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act, or CARES Act, passed by Congress.
“The health crisis we continue to face has had significant impact on many fronts,” Ivey said. “Certainly, individuals, groups and different industries have felt a financial toll, which is why I am proud to continue getting the CARES Act money into the hands of Alabamians who need it.”
Health care and emergency response providers can apply for grants of up $15,000 on a first-come-first serve basis. The application period for the Alabama Health Care and Emergency Response Provider grant program starts at noon on Oct. 5 and lasts until noon on Oct. 16.
Mark Jackson, executive director of the Alabama Medical Association Mark, said a survey showed that more than 70% of Alabama doctors have suffered a severe financial impact from the pandemic and disruptions in their business operations that have limited access to care.
The Alabama Legislature approved an executive amendment by Ivey allowing her to allocate the $1.8 billion from the CARES Act for spending in 10 different categories. The money for the health care and emergency response provider grants comes from the category of up to $300 million to support citizens, businesses, and nonprofit and faith-based organizations directly impacted by the pandemic.
The Ivey administration maintains this web page and public dashboard showing how the CARES Act money is being used within the guidelines set by the federal government.
