BOSTON — Complaining of abdominal pain, Christine Harvey was waiting for a friend to drive her to the hospital when the source of pain appeared.
Harvey, who says she didn’t know she was pregnant, gave birth on the sidewalk outside her Malden apartment complex Monday evening.
“I thought it was her daughter’s doll,” a neighbor told WCVB. “No, it’s a baby, a baby.”
Neighbors called 911 and by the time EMTs arrived, a 6-pound, 6-ounce baby girl was in Harvey’s arms. The mother and child were taken to a nearby hospital where they’re said to be in good health.
“She’s in shock,” Doug Rogers told WCVB of his girlfriend. “She said, ‘I didn’t know either.’”
The couple have two children. Neighbors and friends are helping the pair welcome a new child into their home with donations of clothing and items for a nursery.
