EMT found guilty of neglect in infant’s death

Former Detroit Fire Department EMT Ann Marie Thomas was fired after refusing to treat a baby despite being less than a mile away

DETROIT — A former EMT was found guilty of willful neglect after refusing to treat an 8-month-old baby who later died.

Click On Detroit reported that former Detroit Fire Department EMT Ann Marie Thomas was on duty nine-tenths of a mile away from a home where a baby was not breathing. The baby was eventually treated by another EMT, but she died in the hospital the next morning.

“It is alleged that Thomas intentionally delayed her response to a dispatch of an 8-month-old infant who was struggling to breathe,” Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy said. “It is further alleged that Thomas stopped driving her vehicle and parked less than a mile away from the location. Another EMT unit was dispatched to the location.”

The infant’s mother, Janee Wright-Trussell, was also charged with homicide and child abuse in the case, but she denies any allegations and said she is shocked that the EMT was not charged before she was.
