MELBOURNE, Fla. — A firefighter-paramedic received 17 stitches after his head was sliced open during a collision Thursday.
The ambulance was responding to a call and loading a patient into the back of the rig when the collision occurred, reported Florida Today. The paramedic opened a side door to step outside when another vehicle crashed into the ambulance, causing the door to hit him in the head. The crash shattered the door’s window.
“Our biggest hazards, generally speaking, are operating on or near the side of roadways. We were lucky in this case that he wasn’t seriously injured,” Brevard County Fire Rescue Chief Mark Schollmeyer said.
The paramedic was transported to a hospital and is expected to return to work this week.
