Father of missing Calf. hiker dies during search for son

Paramedics put him on life support within 20 minutes after he collapsed, but he died on the way to the hospital; the search continues for his son

SILVER CITY, N.M. — In a tragic turn of events, the father of the California hiker missing near Reserve, collapsed and died Wednesday, while a search and rescue mission continued for the third day looking for his son.

Ray Lockhart, 70, from Huntington Beach, Calif., collapsed at 11:55 a.m. Wednesday, at his group’s camp, approximately three miles from the New Mexico State Police Incident Base, where a team of more than 20 volunteer searchers from six teams from New Mexico and Arizona continued to search for his son, Stephen Lockhart, 43.

Stephen Lockhart was reported missing by his father, Ray, on Sunday morning, when he didn’t return from a hike on Saturday afternoon.
