WHITMAN, W.Va. — An ambulance collided with two elk after they jumped over a highway median, resulting in the death of both animals.
Associated Press reported that no patients were in the ambulance at the time of the crash, and the two EMS providers were not hurt.
The fatal incident brings the elk population of West Virginia down to 22. In December, 24 elk were reintroduced to the state, which was the first time the animals were there since 1875.
Division of Natural Resources employee Randy Kelley reminded drivers to keep an eye on their speed and be aware of animal crossings, but he also said accidents can be unavoidable.
Up to 60 more elk may be introduced next spring.
