PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. — A 19-year-old has been charged with murder after police say he confessed to killing his mother at a Liberty home Wednesday afternoon, according to a warrant.

Jonathan Caleb Ward told a 911 operator that he killed his mother and then hung up, according to the warrant.

His mother, 45-year-old Linda Ward, will have an autopsy Thursday, Pickens County Coroner Kandy Kelley said in a statement.

Authorities found Linda Ward, with apparent head trauma, in the basement of a home on Golden Springs Drive shortly after 2 p.m. when they responded to the 911 call, Liberty Police Department Chief Adam Gilstrap said.

The murder charge against Jonathan Ward is supported by a video statement from him and by a statement from at least one witness, according to the warrant.

Gilstrap said the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office assisted in processing the home for possible evidence.

Ward is being held at the Pickens County Detention Center pending a bond hearing scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
