RAPID CITY, S.D. — Traffic came to a stop. An ambulance with lights flashing, siren singing and air horn blaring wove its way through the intersection of Omaha Street and East Boulevard.

As the ambulance headed east through the intersection at mid-day Wednesday, the driver had to swerve into the westbound lane to get through the intersection.

That was for a real emergency; an hour later, four new recruits for the Rapid City Department of Fire & Emergency Services practiced navigating an ambulance and a small fire truck through a cone course at the Central States Fairgrounds.
