ROCHESTER, Pa. — Dozens of firefighters helped rescue a family of three from a cave Tuesday after an afternoon rainstorm threatened to wash them over jagged rocks into the Genesee River gorge.
No injuries were reported in the operation, in which emergency responders lowered rope lines in order to retrieve the stranded explorers.
The family — a 24-year-old woman, her 53-year-old father and 46-year-old mother — were found 30 feet inside the cave, perched on a rock ledge. The cave is from 40 feet below ground level in the gorge near Seth Green Drive, Rochester Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Dupra said.
