DALLAS — An 8-year-old boy was killed Sunday afternoon when he was struck by an SUV while running away from wasps, Lewisville police say.
The boy was playing with two friends about 1:50 p.m. at the Northwood Mobile Home Park in the 400 block of East State Highway 121 Business. They disturbed a wasp nest and ran away to avoid being stung, police said.
The boy, whose identity has not been released but who lives in the community, was hit when he ran into the path of a 2011 Dodge Nitro SUV being driven by a 20-year-old woman.
He was transported to Medical Center of Lewisville where an air ambulance was waiting for him, but he died of his injuries before he could be flown to another hospital, police said.
Police said intoxication and excessive speed are not believed to be contributing factors. No charges have been filed at this time.
The driver was given a citation for failure to maintain financial responsibility for driving without insurance at the time of the crash, police said.
The incident remains under investigation.
