AKRON, Ohio — Authorities used a heroin antidote to revive a 2-year-old boy who likely ingested the drug Wednesday shortly after midnight in his Akron home, according to police.

The boy, whose identity police have not disclosed, is expected to survive. He was transported to Akron Children’s Hospital and was revived using the heroin antidote known as naloxone, which is commonly distributed under the brand name Narcan.

The toddler’s parents, a 27-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, told police they are drug abusers. They have not been charged in the suspected overdose. Charges could result after a toxicology screen determines what kind of drug the child ingested.

According to a police report, there was heroin in the home that day.

In the meantime, the child has been placed into the custody of Summit County Children’s Services.

Dispatchers received a call about the overdose at 1 a.m. Wednesday. The boy ingested or came into contact with the suspected drugs in the 500 block of Brittain Road.

The 911 caller told police the baby was having trouble breathing and had blue lips. The child seemed to slip in and out of consciousness throughout the call. A dispatcher advised the caller to keep the child’s airway clear until paramedics arrived.

The case remains under investigation.
