JACKSON COUNTY, Ga. — Three people were killed when a van carrying members of two heavy metals bands crashed into a tree.

The 12 people inside the van were members of Wormreich and Khaotika, NBC News reports.

Three people were ejected from the van and later died. Three others were in critical condition, and a total of eight people were taken to Athens Regional Hospital and Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

The van was traveling from South Carolina to Atlanta, Ga. when it left Interstate 85, drove down an embankment and struck a tree. Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Scott Smith said the cause of the crash is under investigation, but suspects the driver may have fallen asleep. WSBTV.com reports

Both bands were scheduled to play at the South Carolina venue GroundZero on Sunday night. Another band on the Sunday lineup also released a statement saying their show Monday night in Atlanta is canceled.

The victims’ names have not yet been released. Charges are pending in the crash.
