US bill could help children of fallen responders with college

The Children of Fallen Heroes Scholarship Act would help children whose first responder parents have died by increasing grant funding

WASHINGTON — A federal bill could help the children of fallen first responders by giving them more access to scholarship grants.

Lohud.com reported that the Children of Fallen Heroes Scholarship Act, which is being pushed by Sen. Chuck Schumer, would increase the amount of Pell Grant funding that is made available to students whose first responder parents have died.

The bill would allow qualifying students to receive the maximum amount of the grant, which is currently $5,370.

“We owe it to our brave first responders, who risk their lives every day to protect our communities, the comfort of knowing that if they fall in the line of duty, their family will be taken care of,” Schumer said in a statement. “If God forbid, tragedy strikes the home of a first responder, we should do everything possible to help his or her children afford to pay for college.”
