PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — Trans-Star Ambulance Service Training Academy is beginning an EMT Basic course in an effort to help put unemployed coal miners and veterans back in the workforce.
Trans-Star Ambulance Service President/CEO Allen Lafferty has seen a need and wants to help put unemployed coal miners and veterans back to work. With the decline in the coal industry and veterans returning home from serving their country, Lafferty plans to provide training to 100 candidates within the next year. When candidates complete the training and become certified through the National Registry of Emergency MedicalTechnicians and the Kentucky Board of Emergency Medical Services, they will continue their employment by providing pre hospital emergency and non-emergency care and transport in Floyd, Johnson, Knott, Leslie, Magoffin and Pike counties.
The candidates will be employees of Trans-Star ambulance Service when they start the class, which will take approximately 6-8 weeks to complete. The classes will run Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break. The class will prepare the candidates for national and State cognitive, psychomotor tests in which they must pass to become certified.
