OROVILLE, Wash. — Six people were hospitalized, including two young children and a pedestrian, after suspected drunk drivers slammed into each other on Highway 97 near Oroville.
According to a Washington State Patrol report, a northbound vehicle driven by Mary E. Smith-Capote, 44, of Oroville, and a southbound truck driven by Brian L. Mathis, 27, of Oroville, collided at the intersection of Wards Road, about five miles south of Oroville, around 3:10 p.m. Friday.
After the collision, Smith-Capote’s Chevrolet Tahoe struck 21-year-old Colten J. Naclerio of Oroville, who was walking on Ward’s Road near the stop sign. Naclerio was struck after pushing a 17-year-old female companion out of the way of the oncoming vehicle. The female pedestrian was not injured, said Trooper Darren Wright.
Smith-Capote was taken by ambulance to North Valley Hospital in Tonasket.
Mathis and two passengers — Bianca Carrera, 19, and Brisa Mathis, 8 months, both of Oroville — were also taken to the Tonasket hospital.
A third passenger in Mathis’ vehicle, 4-year-old Exander Carrera, was airlifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.
Naclerio was also taken by ambulance to the Tonasket hospital.
None of their conditions were avaiable.
Smith-Capote and Brian Mathis were both arrested for driving under the influence.
