WEST TISBURY, Mass. — When local firefighters arrived at the fully engulfed home of one of their own yesterday, they had to fight their worst fears just as hard as the inferno before them.
But after five hours of battling yesterday’s house fire on Christiantown Road, those fears were realized.
Daniel Prowten, 63, a former lieutenant in the local fire department and a well-known builder on the island, was found dead at 10 a.m. inside the charred remains of his home, according to John Early, assistant fire chief in West Tisbury.
