TURLOCK, Calif. — A man shot himself to death in a vacant room at Emanuel Medical Center, prompting a lockdown at the hospital, a television station reported Saturday.

The man, whose name was not reported, appeared to have no connection with patients, staff or other visitors, Chief Executive Officer John Sigsbury told Fox 40 News.

“It was a terrible tragedy, and our hearts go out to the family of this individual,” he said. “We just pray for them.”

Sigsbury said the effort by employees to save the man’s life was “incredibly gratifying.”

The hospital was on lockdown while Turlock police and Emanuel staff made sure that no one else was in danger, the report said. The hospital continued to accept emergency patients.
