PINGREE GROVE, Ill. — Firefighter and paramedic Bill Misner has had to recover pets that have died in fires. He knows the heartache pet owners face when that happens.
Misner, of the Pingree Grove Fire Protection District, recalled a case in which a 70-year-old pet owner had to witness firefighters removing his dog that had been killed in a house fire. The man wound up with heart palpitations and needed to be hospitalized as a result.
That’s why Misner hopes the department’s newest equipment — pet oxygen masks — will help firefighters save more pets from smoke inhalation — and prevent the heartache.
