PLANT CITY, Fla. — A veteran firefighter-paramedic was charged Monday with battering his wife, police said.

Plant City police say 43-year-old Lance Robert Borges, who has worked for Plant City Fire-Rescue since 2003, was charged with domestic battery. He was being held Tuesday at Hillsborough County Jail with no bail set.

Police said they were called to the Plant City home of Borges and his 45-year-old wife, Michelle Lee Sweet, shortly after 9 p.m. on what was originally reported as a minor traffic crash. Officers determined that Borges and his wife had been involved in a physical altercation and that she had been pulled her out of a vehicle and dragged on a driveway by Borges, who had his hands around her neck, police said.

Plant City Fire Rescue will conduct an internal investigation to determine whether to take disciplinary action against Borges, Assistant City Manager Bill McDaniel said.

Fire Chief Daniel R. Azzariti couldn’t be reached for comment.
