AURORA, Colo. — A male lieutenant with Aurora Fire Engine 1 who made sexual comments about a female EMT over an open dispatch microphone on March 19 is scheduled to retire on June 5.
His retirement is not related to the City of Aurora’s internal investigation of the incident, but Paul Maxon, the female EMT’s attorney, told 7NEWS that the timing is odd.
“We certainly hope that his more than coincidental retirement at this point is some evidence that the city of Aurora is not going to put up with this kind of behavior,” Maxon said.
The city’s investigation concluded there was misconduct after the firefighter said the EMT’s first name over the mic, followed by “The department bicycle. Everyone gets to ride her (laughs).”
He was told twice by a dispatcher that his microphone was open. He was placed on paid administrative leave after the incident.
“The statements made are not only totally outrageous, but completely false,” Maxon said. “Those false things that were said about her live on forever. So, it’s really a terrible situation for her.”
Maxon said his client is embarrassed, hasn’t returned to work, and is keeping all legal options on the table.
