FAIRBORN, Ohio — A firefighter-paramedic driving a patient to the hospital following a suspected overdose began showing symptoms of an overdose himself while transporting the patient and another medic had to stop the ambulance, firefighters said.
“He was not feeling right. He was having issues seeing the speedometer controls,” said David Reichert, division chief for Fairborn fire. “His partner in the back was immediately able to stop the medic in the middle of an intersection.”
The medic was able to administer Narcan to the firefighter and both the firefighter and patient were transported to Soin Medical Center after additional resources were dispatched to the scene, Reichert said.
This incidents happened around 7 p.m. Thursday.
Investigators are still working to determine what the patient and firefighter were exposed to cause the suspected overdoses.
Evidence was collected at the scene and is being sent to the crime lab, where investigators should learn what chemical caused the incidents to occur, said Terry Bennington with the Fairborn police department.
The 49-year-old female patient was treated and released from the hospital, Bennington said.
The firefighter also was treated.
