VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A woman in Virginia has died from injuries she sustained when the car she was riding in was struck by an EMS vehicle.

13NewsNow.com reported the vehicle the woman was in was making a turn at an intersection when a Virginia Beach EMS SUV crossed into the intersection and hit the car.

City officials said the driver of the SUV, Brigade Chief Jeffery Brennaman, was not on call at the time of the crash.

The driver of the car sustained minor injuries. The passenger, 88-year-old Doris Baxter, was transported to the hospital, where she later died.

Brennaman, who has been an EMS provider for 31 years, was reassigned to administrative duties after the crash.

“Consistent with the city’s administrative directives, I have reassigned Chief Brennaman to administrative duties pending the outcome of the investigation. Because this remains an active investigation, the Virginia Beach Police Department will be the lead agency on any further releases,” said interim EMS Chief Ed Brazle. “This is a tragedy and I extend heartfelt condolences to everyone involved.”

The crash is under investigation.
