DETROIT — An assistant EMS chief died in his sleep Sunday.
Detroit News reported that Detroit EMS Assistant Chief Raymond Birch Sr., 54, was a 21-year veteran of the department and described as “a good guy and a good friend,” according to department spokesman and deputy commissioner Dave Fornell.
“We’re gobstruck right now,” Fornell said. “This is very bad.”
Assistant Chief Birch, who was also a former Marine, recently recovered from a hip surgery, but Fornell said he “bounced back” easily.
No other details were released.
