MORGAN, Utah — A series of chain-reaction accidents left one woman dead and another in critical condition Friday morning on Interstate 84.

“The roads were slick at the time,” said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce adding the the actual cause of each accident is still under investigation.

Royce said there were three semis and 11 passenger vehicles involved Friday morning at mile post 109 about a mile north of Taggart.

“We are looking at this being several separate crashes,” Royce said.

The freeway was closed near Taggart, east of Morgan, as rescue and cleanup work got under way.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers said the pileup started when a vehicle slid off the road. Two semis and 13 other vehicles were involved.

Weber County’s heavy rescue truck, capable of transporting multiple victims is now at the scene.

UHP advised westbound I-84 traffic should use I-80 through Parleys canyon instead.
