NEWARK, N.J. — A Friday evening apartment building collapse in Newark that injured six residents, including one critically, remained under investigation Saturday afternoon, officials said.
The apartment building, a Newark Housing Authority property at 39 S. Pine Lane, collapsed around 6 p.m. on Friday, Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said in a statement Saturday.
Six residents were hurt, Fragé said. One of victims was taken to St. Barnabas Medical Center for burn treatment and remains in critical condition, Fragé said.
One resident is at Clara Maas Medical Center, and three were taken to University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A sixth person refused medical attention outside the building, Fragé said.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown. PSE&G declined to comment.
The city’s Department of Public Works began cleaning up the site on Saturday, Fragé said. Displaced and affected residents are being offered help by Newark’s Office of Violence Prevention and Trauma Recovery.
