No punishment for firefighter’s ‘vulgar’ Facebook comment

Under the employee handbook, the firefighter did not violate any policies

SWANSEA, Ill. — An Ill. volunteer firefighter will not be punished for a “vulgar” Facebook comment he made.

A Swansea Volunteer Fire Department firefighter reportedly “took a lot of heat” for the post, which has since been taken down, according to the Belleville News-Democrat.

It is unclear what the nature of the post was, but Chief John McGuire said that the firefighter learned his lesson and was “confident it won’t happen again.”

Under the employee handbook, the firefighter did not violate any policies, meaning any disciplinary action was up to Chief McGuire.

Swansea Village trustee Susan Schultz said she was disappointed in Chief McGuire’s decision, with other board members still encouraging disciplinary action.
